I went out today and bought a new bike. It's a Giant Cypress which looks like an old man bike. Why? Well, because it is. I don't go on dirt trails, so there isn't any point in getting a mountain bike. I don't need the super speed of a race bike. I just use the bike to get to work 'cause it's cheaper than taking the bus and I enjoy it so much more.
I even got fenders and a back rack for it. Totally ridiculous. If you see me biking around, feel free to point and laugh. I'll be laughing too.

However, I think that the back rack is completely necessary if you're going to be bringing any kind of stuff with you, like work clothes and a lunch. I used to use a back pack, but once you go rack, you never go back. However I think next time I'll go for a real road bike. I find that these old man bikes have a lot of extra weight to them. Believe it or not, the weight makes a huge difference when you're riding. Last time I went for a pleasure ride, and didn't put any luggage on my rack, I felt like I was going twice as fast.
Posted by: Kibbee at August 10, 2007 08:24 PMDon't you hate how you find a picture just after you decide that you should stop looking. Anyway, here's a picture of my bike. It's different colors and an older model, but that's basically what it looks like.

Posted by: Kibbee at August 10, 2007 08:27 PMA lot of extra weight for the old man bike? My new one feels like 1/4 the weight of my old one. I think that my old one is steel...
I'll pick it up tomorrow... I'll post my speed record. ;-)
Posted by: Jim at August 10, 2007 11:20 PMi would rather look like a old man than a posuer on a three thousand dollar road bike i just passed.
or the guy on a bike that looks like it should have a motor being pushed up a hill beacause its too heavy.:)
hybrids are the best bikes for day to day use.
anything else being used for commuting is silly.
