Shopping for a new phone / provider

Our cell phone is getting old (for a cell phone) and it's getting difficult to charge it. I'm starting to look around for a new provider / phones for both of us. I know that this isn't the best time of year to shop for a phone, so that part sucks.

Currently we're doing pre-paid with Bell, but I am open to any suggestions.

Anyone have any phone / plan / prepaid option that they like to use?

I'm with Rogers, which is ok, but if I had to choose again, I would've gone with Fido. For one, they share the network with Rogers, and their billing is per 6sec or 12sec, as opposed Rogers (and everyone else) that has per minute billing.

Get a BlackBerry Pearl... I heard somewhere that they're pretty cool.

They do look pretty cool, but it's the data plan that's going to kill me. I'm pretty cheap and don't use the phone too much.

Smart phones really do have their draw, but I don't want to become a crackberry addict.

If the phones are small enough, large enough screens so I could surf the web, and cheap enough not to make me poor, I'd think more about it.

The 'berry plans (from rogers and bell) are around 50 $ and up a month before tax and fees. With pre-paid I spend less than 29 $ for 2 months after tax and fees.

I usually get the phone first and the plan second. If I'm going to be carrying around the thing everywhere it needs to suit me.

I'm really liking my Motorola SLVR, mostly because it fits in my pocket but it's still comfortable to talk on. I went with Rogers.

At this point I'm thinking about getting an unlocked phone from tigerdirect.ca and just staying with pre-paid... then I can shop for the provider as a separate issue. ;-)
