Figured it out
I think that I have finally figured it out. I have been disappointed with some of my pictures how the reds in the sky have not been showing up at all (example). I usually have my camera set to "auto" but it's been totally washing out the colour for sunrise or sunset pictures.
After doing some searching and going through some forums, people suggested for pictures like that setting the ISO setting (film speed?) lower. So I changed it to 100 and am happy with the results. Now to play around with focal lengths and other settings to make neat focus shots.
That and I like playing around with perspective. Man, I love digital photography and how much I can have fun with it. ;-)

Yeah, I've found that leaving my camera on auto usually gives somewhat mediocre results. Things like adjusting the white balance to the kind of lighting you are in, and other settings can have a profound effect on how your pictures turn out. I kind of wish my camera had more settings. One of the things I would like is to be able to set the exposure time, as well as being able to set the focal length. Currently I'm stuck on the camera figuring out these things for me, which is good, but doesn't really allow me to get really creative.
One thing that I enjoy about my camera is the macro mode, which works really good for close up shots. I find things look so much different when you take a closer look at them.
