Ninomaru Palace is surrounded by an expansive garden, designed by the famous lanscape architect and tea master Kobori Enshu (1579 - 1647). In typical Japnese tradition, it is designed around a central pond. Within the pond are three islands: Horai-jima (Island of Eternal Happiness), Tsuru-jima (Crane Island), and Kame-jima (Turtle Island).
