A Snowy Day
Walking down the hill from my apartment to buy booze on New Year's Eve Monday January 24, 2005
It does snow in Japan, as it turns out. It snows on the northern island of Hokkaido, it snows at high elevations like Nagano where the Winter Olympics were held, and it even snows in Tokyo.
These cars stopped mid-climb up the hill when it started to sleet. They put blocks behind their tires and waited it out. The man is spraying hot water onto the road. People got out of their cars with shovels and dustpans and anything they could use to push the accumulating snowy crap off the road.
Buses in both directions stopped to put snow chains on their tires. The guy in the background lying in the freezing slush is the bus driver putting on the snow chains. The guy in front is shoveling slush off the road. Snow chains! Hot water! Shovels! The snow lasted less than an hour and melted away almost immediately.
After seeing the steep hill you live on, this is understandable. Posted by Mom on February 15, 2005 06:15 PM |
