Where I Work

This is where I work, but not for the next week. Everything in Japan is closed for at least a few days around New Year.

Tuesday December 28, 2004

There are Nova branches everywhere. We teach complete beginners to totally fluent speakers, 40 minutes at a time. I sit in a room with 1 to 3 adults, and we work through a lesson in the textbook. I also have to monitor the Voice Room at least one period a day - a room with couches and tables for conversation practice between students and teacher.

The problem with the Voice Room is that every time there is a lull in the conversation, a room full of Japanese heads turn to look at the teacher, waiting for them to break the awkward silence. It's hard to look forward to that.
