Tue Nov 13 07 / 10:31 PM A craving for bananas brought on by a mere edible mention last night has me reading Wikipedia today. Today's Cavendish bananas are in our supermarkets because the previous variety sold worldwide, the Gros Michel or Big Mike, laid down all of its genetically unvaried roots to Panama Disease in the 1950s. The Gros Michel is said to be a superior banana to the Cavendish. Does my mother remember a better-tasting banana? Will bananas and space exploration be the memories of only past generations? |
