a nation of people rejected

I woke up at 2:30 AM when my cell phone chirped. It stays on at night because it is my alarm clock and because most letters from home arrive at these hours. This time it was James emailing. He wanted to tell me about an English movie being shown on TV. English - in any form - is a commodity both coveted and freely traded here.

Sending text messages back and forth on our cell phones in our seperate apartments, James and I watched They Live together in English with Japanese subtitles. It was an amazing piece of bad sci-fi, the kind of movie you have to watch with friends. When I saw the first alien zombie use his wristwatch to teleport, I caught my breath and felt like I was teetering at the top of a pile of memories about being high.

Coming to Japan has definitely resurrected my friendship with James, and furthered it with Tanya. Of course I desperately miss Renuka and everyone else, but sometimes friendship is as easy as being available.
