The obvious awkwardness of reaching for simply anything to talk about was only overshadowed by my own surprise, as I had not even managed to introduce myself when we were working side by side. She has a great name: Katie Caravaggio. She was certainly nice enough, but I could only think, Please stop this and go home! I'm on my break and I'm not very good at this social stuff. She finally said something real, though: among the chatter about comic books, The Simpsons, and first day jitters, she said simply, "In these types of jobs I usually end up getting to know everyone but only making one really good friend." The pause in my mind was probably a lot longer than the one in that staff room, but in it I had a million thoughts about friendship and a single desire to be that really good friend. It is so easy to be a loner, that it is only when faced with the possibility to be otherwise that you realize how hard it is to have few friends.
