The bookstore took me back, and gladly it seems. My first shift was today, and so little has changed that it seems I never left. That feeling displaces me in time, though; if I never left, what day is it now and where have they gone?

But obviously I did leave, because I was welcomed back so wonderfully. There were hugs from the people I'd never hugged before, longer conversations than ever, that feeling, finally, of belonging there. Sometimes you have to leave to make sure you were really there in the first place.

I swear now I will be more social with them, I will go out after work, I will start over the way I always wanted it to be. (Oh, and I will be more gracious to the customer.)

Yes, I'm glad to be back.
