Tue Oct 02 01 / 7:19 AM Another bus, another town, another adventure behind me. I spent three days and two nights on Fraser Island with him and four much older, very British people. The company was the low point, everything else was a high. I can't exclaim too much about Fraser Island. It had everything I ever said I wanted in an adventure: an island, a rainforest, white sand, freshwater lakes, clearwater creeks, ocean beaches, a full moon, no roads - only tracks, the unseen dingo threat, a 4WD, even a shipwreck. We swam, we tanned, we played, we drank, we explored, we pushed. It made me love camping, but it didn't spoil me for any other site; it made me want to go again anywhere, anytime. Ashley asked me, "Surely there is more to your Australia than stopping and starting and the next destinations?" I feel embarrassed to think there might not be. I am loving this trip for all the unseen things it has made visible, but why are my eyes closed to everything else? Why don't I see what Ashley would see here, what he is seeing in his own far away country? I wonder if it is really possible for one to travel a million miles from home to enter a new culture and remain unchanged. He and I celebrated one year together yesterday. He is not surprised. I still happily am. |
