Tue Aug 28 01 / 6:47 AM Last weekend was great! We went to Sydney again to do more things we could say we'd done. The Olympic Park was the first stop. It was well done and smart and fine, but empty. It was interesting to think that one year ago millions of people had stood where I was in some kind of frenzy: screaming, laughing, cameras flashing. Saturday though, there were only the voices and cameras of him and I and a handful of Japanese tourists. It was much too large a structure for only the few of us - like a house that seems unnaturally big once all the party guests have gone home. I was able to lay flat on my back outside the stadium watching my first skywriter type out "Froggy 17.95". And pop music, of all things, serenaded us from the park sound system. I danced on Olympic Boulevard to Benjamin Diamond's In Your Arms. Too bad the eternal olympic flame had been removed for renovations. We wandered through Chinatown for dinner and went to Darling Harbour for general romantic tourist interest. We ended up seeing a 3D movie at the world's largest IMAX screen. We stayed in the same hotel as last time and watched the hookers and the strip club mack daddies for nighttime entertainment; it was mostly comical. The young hookers in unmatched outfits and the old hookers in almost elegant outfits had the same expression on their faces: the look of someone who knows what they are doing, but isn't intellectually attached enough to society to matter - the background for the people who really are in this world. We went to Taronga Zoo on the last day. Situated on an island approachable by ferry, it was kind of like going to Jurassic Park. But no matter the size, the animals are still caged and there is something very sad about it all. Still, watching the animals who had perhaps adapted best to the life was fun. I saw a tasmanian devil, kangaroos, sun bears, and koalas, all very close. The koalas were the best and impossibly cute, and now I really miss having pets. I felt I really saw Sydney this time, and am satisfied to leave it behind until the plane ride home. |
