In all my talk and worries about running out of firsts, I never once stopped to consider that there could be bad firsts, stressful firsts, unwanted firsts.

This was the first time the condom broke. Upsetting enough in itself, it momentarily ruined the balance in the relationship between him and I. It felt like I, as his representation of sex, became an object of fear, disappointment, (the bitterness of) reality. I no longer felt safely in his grasp.

We pretend to forget now, and the fulcrum is back in place.

Nobody likes being taught a lesson about something they already should have known.
